As a Councilor Jamie Cassutt fights for an improved holistic housing system that spans the spectrum from creating affordable housing to helping those without homes. Prior to taking office, her work in the public health field included families without homes. It was one of the primary reasons she moved into policy. After witnessing individuals trying to get back on their feet and repeatedly running into bureaucratic roadblocks, she had to take action. As a first step to take those roadblocks down she sponsored the resolution establishing a Safe Outdoor Spaces pilot program. This program provides pallet homes on a site with 24-hour wraparound services and supervision for some of the hardest to house. This provides individuals who cannot be in congregate shelters a place to go instead of our parks and arroyos. It is important we explore this model, as well as others, that provide for the safety and quality of life for both our unhoused and housed residents.
